Vote from Any Country for ME/FM Charity to Win $20,000!

The first thing to say about this: you don’t need Facebook!

The second thing: you don’t have to be in Canada to vote!

The third thing… well, time to give you the details…

Nature’s Bounty, a long-established manufacturer of vitamins and food supplements, is running an online voting contest for Canadian charities. The National ME/FM Action Network has entered.

The Action Network is probably best-known internationally for spearheading the development of the Canadian Consensus Criteria.

It’s hard to overstate the importance of rigorous diagnostic criteria in this disease: we all owe the Action Network a debt for this contribution to diagnosis and research. The Network also hosted the 2011 IACFS/ME Conference in Ottawa. But as well as these international achievements, for the past twenty years the Action Network has supported patients through advocacy, education, information, and promoting research. It’s the main charity for the 750,000 people in Canada with ME or FM.

So it’s well worth supporting the Action Network in the contest. The top three winners will get $20,000, $10,000 and $5,000 respectively. Of the remaining charities, three will be chosen at random to each win $5,000. US dollars and Canadian dollars are worth the same: $20,000 is about £13,000 or 15,000 Euros. That would be a considerable boost to any national ME/FM charity.

Voting opens on Tuesday, 26 February, and continues with one vote allowed per day until Friday, 29 March.

At the time of writing, voting instructions have not appeared but if you go to the Nature’s Bounty contest webpage, all should become clear on the day.

There’s a big push behind the Action Network for this contest: a team of supporters has already been posting widely on the net to drum up support. Let’s help them win.

Got any questions? We’ve got a thread for that! The competition looks straightforward but the first post in this thread will be updated with instructions and help if any problems emerge.

Have you heard about other contests? Many, many small prize contests are announced in local papers, on the radio, and so on. If you notice any, please message helen41 so that she and the fundraising team can look into them. Every dollar helps!

We've slipped a bit but we're not as far behind as previous days for this time of day, I think – I've just posted a follow-up reminder on Co-Cure and I'd like to remind everyone that people slack off on voting at the weekend so let's not! Let's keep up our voting!

I've just noticed how odd this contest is – there are only 100 votes between 1st and 2nd place, and only 100 between 3rd and 4th, with 5th pretty much nowhere. Very, very close!

Off to bed now – by the time I get up tomorrow, I hope we'll be back in third place. :cat:

I've just noticed how odd this contest is – there are only 100 votes between 1st and 2nd place, and only 100 between 3rd and 4th, with 5th pretty much nowhere. Very, very close!

Yes, I noticed the same thing a while ago when PR sent out a special mailing on the contest. We caught up by about 200-300 votes, and really pulled away from 5th place, but then within 24-48 hours the lead was restored to the same 500-vote cushion it was on before. This wasn't just the time zone effect: it was a big increase in the vote for both of us in a 48-hour period and at the end of it their lead had gone back up to near enough an exact round 500 votes. Now, after we just got a big boost that took us temporarily into 3rd, a lead of 100 has been restored, and it seems to be sticking uncannily close to that 100 – while the second place has slipped back from neck-and-neck to about 100 votes behind first place in the same time period…

These are all animal charities, so I think it's fairly clear that there's a lot of tactical voting going on here – and the round numbers of the lead suggests it's somewhat co-ordinated. I'm not suggesting there's anything wrong with them doing that, but my guess is there's an animal charity (perhaps another forum) where people are managing tactical voting to try to keep both of them in their places. After all, we've done similar on other contests where there were two ME/CFS charities involved. Hopefully the boost in our vote in the last week or so, and the closeness of the race for first, will put enough pressure on the combined tactical vote to force them to let go of 3rd place.

helen41 March 15, 2013 at 5:34 pm

Bounty agreed that groups supporting each other was allowed, although I have stalked the pages of both animal groups and haven't seen a trace of that yet. Hopefully we can do something with Reach for the Rainbow. Fingers crossed we could have a really strong finish!

I didn't. I only looked at their websites, FB pages and then a few individuals who posted that they were voting each day. I didn't see them promoting more than one group.

I have been in contact with Reach For The Rainbow and they are not partnering with any other group. They declined to send out an email asking people to vote for us too. They did say they would revisit the idea next week and make a decision. I receive their emails and they have sent out two emails related to the contest. If the votes between first and second are close next week, they may decide to put the ME/FM Charity in their email — we vote for them, they vote for us. I will let you know what Maggie (the contact person) says next week.

Just over 200 behind now after nearly 15,000 votes – weird! The gap between 1st and 2nd has closed up again. Someone has suggested that the animal rescue and avian group might be vote-sharing and if so, they'd have to choose whether they want 1st place or 2nd-with-3rd because they don't have enough voters for both. I don't know about that, but I can see it all being decided on the final day, at this rate!

Short version, we have to keep the pressure up, up, up!

There is also suspicion that they may be using automated voting software as there has been some pretty odd voting activity at times and there is certainly evidence that they are voting illegally, with one person posting on their facebook page that he had voted – all 7 of him, using different email addresses. So, its possible that they will be docked votes at the end. Either way, we need to keep up the voting ourselves.

Voters can vote for more than one group in a day. They just cannot vote more than once for a particular group in a day. The animal rescue and avian group members could each vote for both groups every day.

We are now 235 votes behind 3rd. I hope Reach for the Rainbow agrees to join forces with us.

I'm trying to get a clear answer on what the deal is exactly and when their members will be voting. We get around 1000 votes a day at the moment so it really needs to be reciprocal with their members not just their staff. But lets give benefit of the doubt and vote for both from now. I expect that will happen soon on both sides but we need that sorted quickly for both groups sake and both sides need to agree to tell all their members by all the various means.
If we do that then we should get third and they should get first.

Reach for the Rainbow has quite a small staff. For the members to vote, they would have to send out an email requesting that they vote for our Charity too. When I initially talked to Maggie a few weeks ago, she said we should wait until closer to the end of the competition before they did that. I think that time is now as they are slipping in the votes. I will contact her today and see what she has to say about including us in their email.

I think it looks really dodgy. Throughout when we get drives gaining us more votes, they mysteriously get more votes out of knowhere and the way they occur is often a bit surprising.

Let's hope it's really surprising to Nature's Bounty as well when they come to do their vote-check at the end.

Kina March 20, 2013 at 2:32 pm

I think the vote only once rule is being broken quite a bit by one of the charities.

LIMIT: A Registered Voter can Vote only one (1) time per day (defined as 12:00:01 am ET to 11:59:59 pm ET) per charity during the Voting Period. If it is discovered (by the Sponsor in its sole and absolute discretion using any evidence available to Sponsor) that attempts were made by a Registered Voter (or any individual purporting to be a Registered Voter) to: (i) Vote more than one (1) time per day (as defined above) per charity during the Voting Period; (ii) use (or attempt to use) multiple names, identities, email addresses and/or any automated, macro, script, robotic or other systems(s) or program(s) to submit Votes; (iii) engage in any form of systematic voting from the same computer/IP address; and/or (iv) engage in any form of proxy voting scheme; then it may result in the disqualification, in the sole and absolute discretion of the Sponsor, of the Votes, Nomination, Charity and/or Registered Voter to which such Votes relate. Any Votes determined by Sponsor, in its sole and absolute discretion, to be in violation of the letter and/or spirit of these Rules (including, without limitation, Votes determined to be coming from any source other than a Registered Voter and/or Votes that cannot be validated in accordance with these Rules to the satisfaction of Sponsor) are subject to disqualification in the sole and absolute discretion of the Sponsor.

Well, they put something on their Facebook page (which it will take time for everyone to see, presumably) and Kina is waiting to see if they email their members too. They're a charity, presumably short on resources, and might not have the capacity for a big mail-out at short notice.

Personally, I'm voting for them (a) so that their members can see a boost and will be more likely to respond and (b) because the disabled people who Reach for the Rainbow represent deserve to get first place – which is out of reach for us – and at this point I'd be using my additional daily vote for them whether we were in a pact or not.

Anyway, just voted!

snowathlete March 21, 2013 at 5:21 am

The other two animal groups are in alliance which is why we are slipping behind. We NEED more votes from RFTRO so I hope they send out an email soon to give a chance of third.

Kina March 21, 2013 at 10:50 am

It's official — Reach for the Rainbow has included us in their latest email:

snowathlete March 21, 2013 at 11:33 am

Kina – thanks for letting us know!
It's worth us making sure that they know that a lot of people with ME/CFS are children. Many of their supporters probably dont realise, and being supporters of a children's charity we'd likely get more votes if we highlight this. Hopefully we can both do well. Also better if they understand that we are voting for them too – the email, perhaps doesnt make that clear.

Kina March 21, 2013 at 11:39 am

snowathlete — Reach for the Rainbow supports adults too. I think it's good that Maggie sent the email and I don't want to go back to her at this time regarding the details. At least we have a chance of getting more votes. I think people will understand the votes are reciprocal because RFTR needs more votes to stay in first place. We will be in contact throughout next week and I will make sure I add a few gentle suggestions.

Kina.

I just received a complaint from Reach for the Rainbow. Their Facebook page is being overrun with posters and comments about ME etc. and some of them appear to be very aggressive. So if any body is posting on the Facebook page could you please stop as this page is for support of children with special needs — it's not about ME and trying to get them to share votes. We don't want to lose this partnership at this critical point so it would be best that we don't upset them any further.

Thanks.

Kina.

This is ridiculous. I have no idea of what they're complaining about:
a) They're now consistently in first place
b) We're obviously helping them win a bunch of money for their charity
c) The comments are perfectly reasonable
d) It's not like they're going to run out of room on their page for other comments
e) The contest will be over in a few days

If the situation were reversed, I would be thrilled to see the support from the other charity. I think they're being extremely short-sighted and ungrateful.

It is not ridiculous at all. Their FB page is set up to give information about their organization which is providing support for clients (mostly children) with special needs. It's not about ME. It was a reasonable thing to ask in my opinion. It has nothing to do with the contest and them being in first place. They have cleaned up the page quite a bit and have left comments of support.

Calling a charity 'short-sighted' and 'ungrateful' is quite out of order especially since they have been giving votes to us, inlcuding us in their emails, and added us on their facebook page. They have a huge corporate membership and this membership now knows who we are and what we represent. I certainly think any negativity directed at Reach for the Rainbow is uncalled for. The person who requested that we not post on the FB is entirely supportive of us and she went above and beyond what I asked. Really, they probably will win and would have done so without our support. I think it's important to keep networking relationships positive.

I think Kina said they'd already sent two out – it's quite an undertaking for a short-staffed charity run by volunteers to send a big mailing out, and I'm grateful that they've done as much as they have.

I'm also glad that we've been able to help boost them – I'll be happy to see them win (since that first place is out of reach for us!). :)

I guess I missed when they sent out the 2nd one, this contest is almost over! So we need to get votes NOW, or it's over for us, so I would think it is worth another mention (if not already done), since we seem to have helped them, unless they got help from some where else?
