Hello,

Just looking for anyone who has been treated by De Meirleir for H2S producing SIBO with rifaximin. I have overgrowths of the following bacteria:

Streptococcus
Staphlycoccus
Prevotella
Porphyromonas
Eubacterium

My doctor prescribed neomycin and clarithromycin, but it doesn't appear to have gotten the job done.

I'd like to know what De Meirleir dosing and length of treatment is when using rifaximin?

Thanks,
Troy

Hi Troy,

Dr. De Meirleir is treating me and others with rifaximin. He uses other antibiotics as well. I am in the middle of a course of rifaximin right now. I had a very high overgrowth of Prevotella. I felt better immediately on rifaximin, though I don't like taking antibiotics.

He told me to take 550 mg twice a day for 8 days followed by 23 days of high dose VSL-3. I took another antibiotic last month and will take that same antibiotic next month. However, only the brand-name Xifaxin comes in 550 mg tabs and it is outrageously expensive. Because of the ridiculous price, he said I could substitute 2, 200 mg tabs of the generic which is quite affordable. I had to get the generic from Canada though.

Best wishes,
Sushi

Did you only have prevotella? I wish my group of bacteria was a bit smaller! I can get rifaximin compounded in australia for not too bad a price.

Hi,

I don't have the tests in front of me, but Prevotella was the main thing. I had killed others in the past.

You can also import Rifaximin from India if you have a pharmacy that will do that. I think that is where mine was manufactured.

Best wishes,

I've discovered why I wasn't making progress. I got the test redone through my local GP. I have a large clostridium overgrowth now, despite taking probiotics.... Have to talk to my specialist tomorrow about it.

What test did you use to figure out which bacterial overgrowth you have? I have high hydrogen-producers based on lactulose breath test from Commonwealth Labs but am sensitive to many high thiol (sulfur) foods & also experienced an allergic reaction to a sulfa antibiotic. I am very curious which bacteria I have and if I may have hydrogen-sulfide-producers. I respond well to Rifaxamin (I have done two rounds- each two week courses), but my SIBO comes back pretty quickly after I finish the course of antibiotics.

This was an old thread so you may not get a response from the original posters, but I know that Prof. De Meirleir has been using this test recently. I have had it and I counted about 67 forms of bacteria tested.

Stool tests only look at the colon/large intestine though? So whatever is overgrowing in the small intestine wouldn't necessarily show up, at least that's what I thought?
