Hello. I have a quandry. I have CFS along with Fibromyalgia. I have been reading on the internet and getting books on alternative therapies for Fibromyalgia and CFS. Through the information I have been getting, I have been experimenting with supplements for 3 years. I have eliminated those that don't work or have bad side effects. Through my experimenting, I have found a combination that REALLY works well. I have been able to go through most of my day without pain and I can go to the gym 2 to 3 times a week. It really is a miracle.

The problem is that I am taking an enormous amount of supplements (60 a day) and I have very bad gastritis. I am taking a medicine called sucralfate which helps a bit.

If there is someone here who really knows their CFS and/or Fibromyalgia SUPPLEMENTS, I would really appreciate your help. Could you let me know what you would eliminate?

I don't take so many supps as you do, but on top of that have aggressive ABX therapy that is hard on the stomach. In order to ease the problem, I drink fresh cabbage juice (home made) away from food, several times a day and it helps me (there was even in the 50's a double blind study done by Dr Cheney from Stanford about its efficiency in gastric ulcer therapy).

It sounds good, but I can't have cabbage because I also have Hashimoto's Disease (Autoimmune thyroid disease). Cabbage lowers thyroid function and interferes with synthroid.

Chlorella gave me EXTREME gastritis. First thing I would eliminate.

SAM-e and DMAE also gave me stomach pain. Probiotics can be hit or miss.

Do you take this many supplements every single day? Personally, I would take some days off now and then from All the supplements.

Absorbic acid (high dose vitamin C) could trigger issues like gastritis. There is a lot of other things you mentioned I have never even heard of until now.

The Vitamin C is from the Pall Protocol and it is buffered so it shouldn't cause cause stomach problems.

I usually take a break on the weekends from all the supplements because I do not have to work. I just deal with the pain on those days.

I'll try leaving the Chlorella out for a few days and see what happens. It is in there because for some reason it gives me some energy, but I could probably live without it. Thanks.

@Mya Symons, this is a complex picture, and as we all react differently to various supplements, I'm not sure that anyone can tell you the answer based on the list. Also, there are various possibilities for what is causing the problem:
  • One specific supplement
  • Several different supplements, or their interaction
  • The sheer number of supplements
The last one is a notable possibility because you're dumping a lot of binders and fillers into your stomach every day, and many people's stomachs react to that.

There is a methodical procedure that you can do that will find the problem and make it clear how to fix it. It's essentially a variation of the binary search algorithm that's been used by programmers for decades. You can do this on weekends, when you normally wouldn't be taking any supplements.

Start with all your supplements; this is the first "current group". Then go through the following steps until you've determined what the problem is.
  1. Divide the current group in half, putting what you would consider to be your most important supplements in one half, and the least important in the other. Try to keep supplements from a given protocol together, at least in the early rounds.
  2. Take the supplements in the group that contains the more important ones. For best results, take it on both days of the weekend.
  3. If you have no problems taking just this group (Group 1), then next weekend, add in half the supplements from the other group (Group 2). If you do have a problem, make Group 2 your current group and next weekend, go to Step 1; if you still have a problem after doing Step 1 and this is your first time through these instructions, it is the number of supplements that is causing the problem.
  4. If you still have no problems with the new Group 1, each weekend, continue adding half of the remaining Group 2 to Group 1.
  5. If one of these additions causes problems, then remove half of what you added; this becomes the new Group 2.
  6. Try the new Group 1, and then go to the instructions starting at Step 3. Eventually you'll find a single supplement, or a small number of supplements, that are causing the problem.
Once you find the supplement or supplements that appear to be causing the problem, temporarily put them back into the group of supplements that you're taking and remove the same number of less important supplements. If the gastritis returns, this verifies that it was those supplements. If it doesn't, this means that it is simply the number of supplements that is causing the problem, and you should remove one or more of the less important supplements until the problem goes away.

This should work...

May be obvious: Do you take all of them with food? Some won't matter but IMO some will be very irritating to your system if taken on an empty stomach.

I am doing similar to zzz's suggestion, to find which supplement(s) are causing me symptoms.

I do take them with food. But, for lunch I always eat a salad with mixed greens. Maybe I could try adding some carbs and that would help.

Mya,

Have you tried deglycyrrhizinated licorice? It works well for me to reduce stomach pain and nausea. Take it on an empty stomach, a while before taking anything else.
