Despite some new drugs in the past going through Phase 1,2 and 3 testing as well as FDA approval, they have proved toxic to the heart and eventually had to be withdrawn. Many have argued that drug effectiveness tested on animals has proved to be not always a reliable way of ensuring its safety for humans.

GE Life Sciences are now developing human heart stem cells for use in drug testing, which could prove more reliable and save suffering to those with heart problems embarking on a new drug, as well as the $billions in damages to the drug company.

Good news for future heart patients.
