Vote from Any Country for ME/FM Charity to Win $20,000!

The first thing to say about this: you don’t need Facebook!

The second thing: you don’t have to be in Canada to vote!

The third thing… well, time to give you the details…

Nature’s Bounty, a long-established manufacturer of vitamins and food supplements, is running an online voting contest for Canadian charities. The National ME/FM Action Network has entered.

The Action Network is probably best-known internationally for spearheading the development of the Canadian Consensus Criteria.

It’s hard to overstate the importance of rigorous diagnostic criteria in this disease: we all owe the Action Network a debt for this contribution to diagnosis and research. The Network also hosted the 2011 IACFS/ME Conference in Ottawa. But as well as these international achievements, for the past twenty years the Action Network has supported patients through advocacy, education, information, and promoting research. It’s the main charity for the 750,000 people in Canada with ME or FM.

So it’s well worth supporting the Action Network in the contest. The top three winners will get $20,000, $10,000 and $5,000 respectively. Of the remaining charities, three will be chosen at random to each win $5,000. US dollars and Canadian dollars are worth the same: $20,000 is about £13,000 or 15,000 Euros. That would be a considerable boost to any national ME/FM charity.

Voting opens on Tuesday, 26 February, and continues with one vote allowed per day until Friday, 29 March.

At the time of writing, voting instructions have not appeared but if you go to the Nature’s Bounty contest webpage, all should become clear on the day.

There’s a big push behind the Action Network for this contest: a team of supporters has already been posting widely on the net to drum up support. Let’s help them win.

Got any questions? We’ve got a thread for that! The competition looks straightforward but the first post in this thread will be updated with instructions and help if any problems emerge.

Have you heard about other contests? Many, many small prize contests are announced in local papers, on the radio, and so on. If you notice any, please message helen41 so that she and the fundraising team can look into them. Every dollar helps!

OK, they’re open for business and I’ve just been the first voter! :)

Very pleased to say that voting is very, very easy.

Go to this page:

http://www.sharethebounty.ca/charities.php

Click on ‘N’ to find the National ME/FM Action Network – it’s the second on the list of charities beginning with ‘N’.

Click on the ‘vote’ button next to it.

Enter your email address, do the Captcha thing that proves you’re not a robot, tick that you accept the T&Cs, don’t tick the thing saying you want to be kept updated on stuff from Nature’s Bounty, hit the ‘vote’ button, that’s it.

Until tomorrow!

Don’t forget we have a thread on this for support and instruction – I’m just getting my info in early because I’m in the UK and everyone else will still be asleep for a bit…

http://forums.phoenixrising.me/inde…0-voting-contest-help-faqs-and-updates.21764/

Interestingly there are already some charities with votes even though it must be 5am in Canada. Here’s the leaderboard:

· Alberta Animal Rescue Crew Society 15
· MANITOBA WILDLIFE REHABILITATION ORGANIZATION INC. 11
· SENIOR ANIMALS IN NEED TODAY SOCIETY 8
· WILD ROSE HUMANE SOCIETY 5
· ASPERGER MANITOBA INC. 3

As so often happens in these contests, charities for animals can get a lot of votes! Disease-specific charities need to work hard to overtake them but we can do it.

Come on Europe and Oz! Let’s get some votes in before Canada wakes up and see if we can get onto the leaderboard – it might help us get attention and extra votes.

And please help yourselves to my new signature.

Now they have 5!
I really thing this is achievable. Great article, makes it all so easy and we're on it right at the start! I've taken your signature too – thats really gonna help me remember, and hopefully help others notice too. Thanks Sasha!

Sasha February 26, 2013 at 4:33 am

And another. I promise not to do this forever but it's exciting to see us going up the board at the beginning! We're the only one of these guys who's moving. The rest must have exhausted their support in this time zone! It's only 6:30 am in Canada now – it will be interesting to see what happens when they wake up.

 • Alberta Animal Rescue Crew Society15
 • MANITOBA WILDLIFE REHABILITATION ORGANIZATION INC.11
 • SENIOR ANIMALS IN NEED TODAY SOCIETY8
 • NATIONAL ME/FM ACTION NETWORK5
 • WILD ROSE HUMANE SOCIETY

Sasha February 26, 2013 at 4:36 am

Every vote has come from Phoenix Rising so far – I'm proud of us!

Let's all of us get the Action Network up the charts so when our Canadian friends wake up this morning they can have a big smile on their faces! :)

Sasha February 26, 2013 at 4:47 am

We're in third place now:

 • Alberta Animal Rescue Crew Society15
 • MANITOBA WILDLIFE REHABILITATION ORGANIZATION INC.12
 • NATIONAL ME/FM ACTION NETWORK8
 • SENIOR ANIMALS IN NEED TODAY SOCIETY8
 • WILD ROSE HUMANE SOCIETY5

:):):)

Still in third:

 • Alberta Animal Rescue Crew Society 15
 • MANITOBA WILDLIFE REHABILITATION ORGANIZATION INC. 13
 • NATIONAL ME/FM ACTION NETWORK 11
 • SENIOR ANIMALS IN NEED TODAY SOCIETY 9

Come on, we may be sick, but we can at least beat the animals! ( … not literally though :sluggish: )

Sasha February 26, 2013 at 5:25 am

If we can storm the board today, a lot of supporters of other charities will be discouraged and the less committed ones won't come back to do their daily voting.

Mark is sending out the PR email newsletter any minute if he hasn't already and this is the lead item so I hope we'll get more votes from that. :)

Hi golden – just under the tickboxes for T&Cs and getting mailings, can you see a 'vote' button just under there? It's a little hard to see – it's pale purple on a dark purple ground with 'vote' in white letters.

Edit: a cleverer person than me could provide a screenshot…

Sasha February 26, 2013 at 6:28 am

I've just strained my eyesight and read the rules and regs about the runner-up prizes (for those charities not in the top three at the end). The more votes your charity got, the more chances it has in the random draw for three more cash prizes – it's as though each vote is a ticket that gets thrown into a barrel and they shake them all up and draw three out.

We've got every reason to vote like crazy – we get multiple shots at this! :)

Hi everyone, I have been sending out links via Facebook, one thing to make things easier I have also linked Phoenix Rising but the link comes up with this

http://phoenixrising.me/archives/15930

Is there anyway to change the links name so it reflects what we are doing and usually a picture with the link. I find many people like that better. People are more likely to click the link this way. Thanks everyone for all of this write up and all your hard work!

Here's a screenshot. See the vote button in the bottom right?
If you dont, then your screen resolution might be low, in which case you will get a little grey scroll bar on the right hand side of the purple window (below the white cross), you can use that to scroll down to see the vote button.

We have breached 100 votes. That's really great, it puts us in third, but first isn't that far ahead. We can definately catch them, but we need to push on!

Make sure you send a link to the voting page or this article, to your friends and family. Get your mum, dad, sister, brother, nephew, neice, aunt, uncle, son, daughter, neighbour, dog, cat and ginea pig to vote! OK, the last three are probably against the rules, besides which they may have conflicting interests, but seriously – pass this on to other people. It really does make a difference!

I agree – votes are flailing around as the morning hits the different time zones in Canada and as people start hitting up their online contacts, us included. It's going to be all over the place so we must just push, push, push!

Yeah, those cats and stuff have got vested interests in some of those other charities… :cat:

Thanks much to Sasha for the article and to the ME/CFS Fundraising group for getting a charity entered.

I was149 and then it allowed me to put in my husband's email address, he was 155.

I did not read the T & C's, I hope that they both will count. If anyone knows how many emails can come from one IP address, we may be able to get our family's permission and just put in their email addresses every day??

By the way – we are still in second place in the middle of the day – yahoo

I agree, this is well worth checking!

We are in second at the moment, but several others are close behind!

On the main page of the article – View the Post on the Blog - You can share the page via facebook, twitter, google+, by using the controls on the left:
View attachment 4550
Just click on the green button and then click Facebook, Twitter, or whatever method of sharing you want to use. Makes a massive difference spreading the word. Also if you have popular friends or contacts, ask them to re-tweet your tweet. Same with facebook posts.

I just noticed that there are share buttons at the bottom of the forum thread too!

Sasha or anyone else – do you know how I can fix my signature so that it stays centered and doesn't all justify to the left when I use it like this:

I use the formatting tool above the signatures text box to do this but presumably you've tried that!

snowathlete February 26, 2013 at 12:08 pm

You can do it by selecting all the text in your sig with your mouse or by holding down shift and using the cursor keys, and then click the allign centre button:
View attachment 4551

Note: you dont see the control buttons if you try to edit on your mobile, ipod (i didnt anyway), so you'll need to do it on your computer/laptop/pad.

If your on your phone, or it isnt working on your computer then try adding tags on either side of the text like this.

text you want to display

SpecialK82 February 26, 2013 at 12:20 pm

Thanks Sasha and Snowathlete (Love the screen shots!) I did try using the align center originally after I just cut and pasted Sasha's sig into my signature box. It all slid to the left in preview. Then I highlight each line individually and hit align center, it still slid left in the preview.

So just now I went back into it and it all started out of the left side, and I then re-applied the align center to each line and it's working now. So maybe where the text is before applying the align center may make a difference? Otherwise, not sure why it didn't work the first time.

Just wanted to throw that in there if others are stuggling with it.

We're off to a fantastic start! I will be voting daily, and encouraging my family and friends to do the same! I love that this one doesn't require Facebook or any weird social media broadcasting. Quick, easy, and private.

Even super ill, we can make a difference this way. Thank you to everyone who is voting.

snowathlete February 26, 2013 at 4:52 pm

283 votes. Back into second place. We've done good so far and it just goes to show what we can achieve, but we need to keep going – keep pushing hard.

Think who else you can tell about this – use it as an excuse to get back in contact with someone you havent spoken to for a while and send them a mail.

This is a major way that we can truely make a difference for our neglected illness. We have some power here to effect change. Strengthening each of our ME/CFS charities should be a principle focus of all of us this year.

still in second, 447 votes. All the rest in the top five are animal charities, so we are doing superb but need to keep it up. If we slack off any day then we lose, so keep voting and post here when you do!

Sasha February 27, 2013 at 4:34 am

Yup, we're up against puppies and whatnot, always a tough one – we may not be as cute :alien: but we can be more persistent!

snowathlete February 27, 2013 at 6:51 am

First is achievable, but we've got to up our game a bit.

Remind your friends and family to vote today! Send them an email and ask them to reply once they've done it.

Tell your friends at church about it. Text your friends. Going to the doctor today? Tell him/her about it too – they may as well do something useful for you while you're there…

Got kids? Ask them to vote and to tell their friends by text, facebook, twiter, school, clubs etc.

Reply here once you've done something to get more votes, so that other people are encouraged to dig in!

Sasha February 27, 2013 at 6:59 am

We're closing up on first place again, after nearly 9,000 votes in the contest altogether:

 • Alberta Animal Rescue Crew Society606
 • NATIONAL ME/FM ACTION NETWORK527
 • OOPSADAZY RESCUE AND SANTUARY SOCIETY352
 • SENIOR ANIMALS IN NEED TODAY SOCIETY339
 • MANITOBA WILDLIFE REHABILITATION ORGANIZATION INC.300

Incidentally, Canada is between 4 and 8 hours behind the UK, depending which province. Alberta (where the 1st place charity is located) is 7 hours behind so they're about to get up for the day and get a load of local support so let's keep piling on the votes…

Thanks, Helen.

There's some sort of daily reminder function bundled in with Windows, I think – we've got someone looking into that but I'm not sure about the timeline so if anybody knows about it, now's the time!

I expect this thread will be pretty visible at least for the first couple of weeks but it's a long contest and it could even end up being won on the basis of who remembers to vote at the weekends. So reminders are good. :p

"There is a limit of one (1) Voter Registration per person/email address permitted during the Voting Period.".
It is restricted to per person, not per household, so your husband can vote, as long as he has his own email address.
When it is per person, I think generally you are very safe with 4 or 5 votes from the same IP address. That is an average size family after all.
I think they start to question things when 100 votes come from the same IP address.
I have myself, my husband and my daughter all voting from the same IP.

No, I'm not involved with creating a signup list for reminders on this contest. I am involved with a long-term project that will alert the ME/CFS Community of Contests like this through an email alert system and they will have an option at that point to receive daily reminders. But this is a big project and won't be done anytime in the near-term. Thanks!

As a temporary measure, I've set up a google group called me cfs charity competitions voting reminder service

You can join this group by clicking here and joining. It only takes a few clicks and you dont need to have google/gmail to join – any email address will do.

MAKE SURE YOU CHANGE "Don't sent email updates" TO "Send me an email for every new message (less than one per day)" OTHERWISE YOU WILL NOT GET THE REMINDER!

Once joined you dont need to do anything. You will get a reminder each day for the remainder of this competiton with a link to the site and a reminder of the instructions.

I see that a few people have joined the mailing list already – thats great!

For those without gmail, you can still join the group without a gmail account, but you will need to open a google account. You do this with your existing email address, which doesn't have to be a google one. It is a quick and painless process.
You can sign up HERE. Then once you've got your google account, go to the group HERE and you'll be able to join the group.

It's a one time thing, so once you've signed up, you're sorted. No more fuss, and you'll get the reminders to your current email address.

But here is the important bit, the link to the voting page:
http://www.sharethebounty.ca/charities.php
Click "N" then "vote" next to the second one called "National ME/FM Action Network".
Enter your email address, prove you're not a robot and click vote. That's all there is to it.

You can vote once a day per. So please do it every day. It really matters.

Thanks

Please vote for this ME/CFS charity. It only takes a second to help them get funding.

Just voted – still holding in second place, other people on our heels – every vote is going to count, especially this weekend!

Huge opportunity to surge ahead at the weekend, when online voting generally dips!

Reach for the Rainbow doubled their votes in the last 24 hours from the day before. I wonder what they are doing?
We have always been excellent weekend voters, plus ME groups in Australia will be helping soon, as their contest is ending. We need to pick up the slack over the next few days.

Even though I am sad to see our cause in third place right now, I am glad to see Reach For The Rainbow Ontario is in the running. This is a very small organization that provides all sorts of supportive services for children/adults with special needs. If it weren't for them, my daughter would have never been able to go to a residential camp for 2 weeks every summer which is and was the only kind of respite we have ever gotten. As much as I love animals, it would be nice if some of these contests were restricted to people only. In Ontario, our government has drastically cut services to sick people (especially the chronically ill), people with special needs to the point of unless you are in some kind of crisis state, you will languish on a waiting list or not get services at all. These charities often help supply services that the government used fund but have cut the funding to due to lack of resources. The money that is won in these contests is vital to keep some of them going so VOTE, VOTE, VOTE.

Reach for the Rainbow has a huge amount of parents that have children/adult children with special needs. They are hooked into many many services that are associated with special needs — autism, community living, developmental services, spina bifida, March of Dimes etc., summer camps, residential programs, school programs, Children's Aid Society etc. They are a small organization and I suspect the are networking very effectively right now with the many services they are associated with because they need the money to keep going. If they can't afford to run their charity, many organizations and parents will lose a vital service.

I checked them out online when I saw them storming into second place there and I agree with you – they sound great! If we're going to get pipped I'd rather it was by this kind of charity.

But I'd rather not get pipped! Let's keep voting. We're all in the process of building our support base and this is a five-week contest. It's all to play for.

I love animals too, but I'd also like to see charities that need the money more get more chance. Fact is, a lot of animal charities already get a lot of funding from donations and legacies in people's wills. I doubt anyone leaves money in their will for ME/CFS charities, and as we know, not that many people donate to the cause when they're alive either.

Still, we cant do much about that, but we can vote for charities in competitions like this and there are enough of us that we can win competitions like this. I think we are getting better at it.
So, keep voting and hopefully we can regain some ground over the weekend.

I didn't think your post sounded negative at all. :)

It's a bit late now for me to find out what they are doing to get the votes (being a Friday, after 1 pm). I could contact them next week and ask them how they set things up to get so many votes. I am in direct contact with them because we get services from them, I am sure our worker would be happy to put me in contact with the person/people who are in charge of getting votes.

I would suggest that Canada be removed from this thread title. Some users might not even click, thinking that it's only for Canadians to vote on.

For anyone curious, the rules say they can discard multiple votes from the same IP/computer.

good suggestion. we need to make it clear that this is an International effort.
Re multiple votes from the same IP/computer, as a contester, I can assure you they are not talking about 3 or 4 or 5 votes from the same computer. That is an average family.
Sometimes people vote with hundreds of accounts to try to win. Those are the people they are targeting.
